Abstract 2

Ok, so I cheated on the assignment I wrote about in my last post when I created this drawing. This time, after I recreated the small one inch section I had chosen, I added to it. I couldn't help myself. There was a big space in the upper right corner begging for some attention. But hey, a wise woman once said, rules are meant to be broken, at least the dumb ones. I happen to agree.

Abstract 1

My mother adores watercolor paintings and has been on a twenty year quest to learn how to create them. She is the definition of persistence. Recently she has been taking a watercolor class at a local university. Her latest assignment is to take a photograph, snip out a small section and create a series of small watercolor paintings based on this section. Next, they are to take their favorite out of this set of paintings, blow it up and repaint it. I think this sounds like a really fun and promising assignment, one that I thought I'd try myself. Ok, let's be honest. I'm going to try this assignment with a few twists. First, I will not use watercolor. I will use Photoshop. (I still believe that one day Photoshop will be accepted as a serious medium by fine artists. If not, I think it would be a loss to the art world. I love painting in Photoshop and I think the results can be really wonderful.) Next twist in this assignment- instead of taking one inch sections out of a photograph I will use one of my own paintings. This morning I took 8 one inch sections out of a painting I did of a cow awhile ago, and blew the sections up to fit on an 8.5 x 11 inch piece of paper. I then re-drew the first section. It was really fun. The cool thing is that the next 7 times I want to draw, I don't have to search for a subject, I'm all ready to go.

A bit of this, a bit of that

There are lotss of little moments that I love in this one, specifically on her hands and face. I love that tons of colors and little specks can work together to create something that feels so feminine.

Yellow

I've been wanting to try drawing a picture filled with tons of little bits of color, that could be really cool. Clearly, this didn't end up happening here. So, I'll have to try again soon. I think maybe I need to use a different subject for this idea. Maybe a person or street or something with more color involved. I really like how this picture turned out though. I love the huge expanse of yellow. Most of my landscapes have had more of a traditional color scheme, beige sand, or green grass, etc. So I find it fun to see so much yellow for a change, it feels nice. I also like the way the mountains have a lot of detail if you get up close, makes them look really intriguing.

I wanted to see what it'd look like with even more yellow:

Side note- I just learned that tonight at 11:48PM it will officially be spring. How exciting! I didn't think it was going to be officially spring until Friday.

To The Pacific Ocean

I've been thinking about the ocean lately. Especially when I am at work and dreaming of being other places. This drawing is an attempt to capture some the many beautiful colors of ocean. I love the bits that are a clear pure blue. When I lived in Hawaii, I loved how the ocean looked on clear sunny days, the colors were amazing.
